The PSCA September Event Date & Venue Changed......

The PSCA September Event Date & Venue Changed.......The PSCA will not be running at Fontana the weekend of Sept 10-12, 2010. The Accufab West Coast Shootout Presented by RC Construction Services will be moved to the Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on the weekend of September 17-19, 2010. There will be a Test n Tune on Friday from 5-9pm... The full event schedule will be posted later on this evening.

The PSCA would like to thank Chris Blair at LVMS for stepping up and adding this date to their busy 2010 schedule.. Adding an event this late in the season is no easy task as very few dates are available for series that needs an entire weekend... Auto Club Dragway in Fontana has been battling a noise issue with the community and has a crucial hearing on Sept 14th and the legal team did not want to throw up any more red flags (the excessive noise from our cars) days before the hearing... We want to race at Fontana for years to come, so if one race has to get affected to insure the PSCA racing in the future at Auto Club Dragway we're willing to take that chance.. If all goes well, our Nov 5-7 World Finals will be run as scheduled... The PSCA apologizes to all the racers and teams that are affected with this change... Hopefully everyone will realize we did not have an option and done the best we could under the unforeseen circumstances..

Thanks for supporting the PSCA now and in the future!!

Jack Gottfried
Friends and laughter defined his life

Just follow the laughter. Whether it was Disneyland, drag racing, classic cars, Maui, or spending time with friends and family, Jack Gottfried loved to laugh. Always on the go, he spent his days racing from event to event with a story, a joke, and a ready smile for any occasion. "Back up the bus," he'd say meaning he wasn't finished yet with whatever was happening, and then he continued talking -- full speed ahead.

Retired from owning his construction company, Raja Engineering, previously he worked in the grading business with his uncle, worked for North American as a visual optics adjustor, and started out early working in a bicycle shop, but what he was best at was making friends.

Another of Gottfried's favorite sayings was, " I'm here for you." You could rely on him for anything. Although Gottfried was a fierce drag racer, he was willing to help a competitor, like the time he lost in the drag quarterfinals and was packing to head home. Another driver had a blown tire and had to quit. Gottfried pulled his own front tire and rim off and loaned it to the other racer. It was a perfect fit and the other driver kept racing. "By the time we switched tires back and loaded everything up, it was 3:30 am," said his long time friend Hank Oliver, "but as Jack always said, "Drag racing is about people you meet with a common interest who become your friends.""

Gottfried's generosity showed itself again in his sponsorship of the San Juan Creek Park Tot Lot. Before Gottfried's beloved dog Honey died, he and Honey could be seen cruising around town and playing fetch in his neighborhood park. Once Honey passed on, Gottfried donated money to the city of San Juan Capistrano to pay for the addition of playground equipment for a kids' "tot lot" and a dog walk for dogs. He wanted it to be an anonymous donation, but due to circumstances that wasn't possible. Today in San Juan Creek Park there is a brass plaque commemorating Honey and Gottfried's generous gift.

Gottfried didn't like to wait for things to happen. He got his nickname, Action Jack, not because he was such a great drag racer, although he was that, but because he loved "to be in the middle, creating both funny and serious situations," said Oliver. That's exactly how he spent his last days surrounded by scores of friends, cracking jokes, and sharing laughs.

While at Mission Hospital his room seldom had less than 10-12 friends and often it was standing room only. "We even had to rotate people out so that others could come in to visit Jack," Renee McDowell, his fiancee, said.

Jacob Herbert Gottfried passed away July 7, 2010. He was born in Yonkers, NY in 1944 and moved to Norwalk, CA in 1952. He later attended and graduated from Excelsior High School. He was a long time resident of San Juan Capistrano and a parishioner at San Juan Mission. Gottfried's mother, Carol, was one of the first women to sell cars in the LA area, his father, Irving, was a dairyman for Knudsen Dairies. From his parents, he learned to get up early and get going.

One of the places he liked to go was Disneyland. Every year he bought season passes and he and Renee would often go there weekly even if it were just for dinner. One of his most prized possessions was his Mickey Mouse watch. A story he loved to tell over and over was about the first time he took Renee's grandson Jakey to Disneyland and the joy he got watching Jakey's face. "Jack was like a kid himself when it came to the rides. He sure loved Disneyland," his friend Dave Schaub said.

If it wasn't race season, Gottfried could be seen just about any weekend driving one of his classic cars. He made several cross-country trips in his 1932 Ford Roadster and almost never missed a hot rod car show or swap meet. Locally he was instrumental in forming the Saddleback Knights car club.

Maui was another of his loves. He vacationed there with Renee every chance he got, and never missed going there the first two weeks of May to celebrate both their birthdays. Hawaiian shirts, shorts and flip-flops ruled the days and nights, and his laughter bounded around the island.

His friends are full of stories and "Jackisms." "Back up the bus," when he wasn't finished with something; "I'm not feeling the love," when the teasing got out of control; "Okay, what's happening," just about any time and anyplace when he was ready to get moving again.

Back up the Bus, Jack. You are going to be missed.

In addition to his fiancee, Renee Mc Dowell, Gottfried is survived by his brother, John Gottfried; his sisters Yvonne Gottfried and Olga Smith; his loving cousins, nieces and nephews; and a multitude of friends.

Elswick has raced Mustang's in the NMRA (National Mustang Racers Association) competing in the Mod Motor class and also tried her hand at a twin turbo 2007 Stang just for kicks!! After NMRA, Elswick spent a season working with the American Drag Racing League (ADRL) then had an opportunity to travel overseas and work at the new Qatar Racing Club (QRC) for Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Thani...

"Having the opportunity to add a person to our PSCA staff with years of experience in the racing field is very beneficial to the continued growth of our organization" Says Mel Roth, PSCA President. BISA Insurance saves the day, and just maybe the season....

After the 50th Anniversary NHRA Winternationals was over in Pomona, two PSCA Outlaw 10.5 racers who also run in NHRA's Competition Eliminator had thoughts of a lost racing season after Ron Weems & Gary Ross both had top-end crashes at the Fair Plex. Weem's Car was completely totaled while Ross had major damage!!

Luckily for both driver's they had contacted Bill Flake of BISA Insurance Services and purchased "Race Car" Insurance!! After a $2,500.00 deductible Gary received a check for $31,500.00 to completely repair his tore up 2005 Grand-Am. Look for Gary's return at the May Fontana event... Ron used his check from BISA to Purchase Frank Tamez '07 Bickle GTO and did not miss a PSCA race!!! BISA also pays PSCA Contingency Cash on their "Race Car" Insurance Services in Pro Street & Outlaw 10.5

Holder Going Take A Break From Heads-Up Racing????

It appears that the current MagnaFuel XDR Champion Roger Holder Jr. will be taking some time away from heads-up racing and concentrate on his new racing venture, an IMCA dirt car. Roger's PSCA / XDR car (pictured below) has been the center of quite a bit of internet controversy and that might be part of the reason if Roger does indeed step away.. Holder has not missed a PSCA race in over 6 years, which is one of the longest consecutive event streaks currently in the PSCA. All of us at the Pacific Street Car Association wish Roger and his entire Holder Motorsports Team the best of luck at the dirt tracks and hopefully we will see him again soon battling for more wins and championships at the drags!!!

PSCA Outlaw Racer Gets Ink On K&N Filters Website...

"Sonny Leonard developed a Chrysler hemi type head and adapted it to a Chevrolet," said Ross. "Our 2005 Pro Stock Grand Am with its new Sonny's 711 cubic inch Chevy Hemi engine gives us 1600 to 1700 horsepower for an additional 100 to 200 horsepower difference over our previous power plant."

Ross is a contender in the Outlaw Class after his win at the PSCA Labor Day Nationals. The Orange County California resident then set the pace with another number one qualifier at a heated West Coast Shootout in Fontana, California. Ross had a blistering 6.874 at 200.92 mph.

"Track conditions were tough at Fontana," said Ross. "Track temperatures reached a sizzling 135 degrees and the competition was fierce. Almost all of the racers who competed at this event ran at over 200 mph."  Check out the complete story >HERE<

17 Year-Old Meaghan Henderson Becomes PSCA's Youngest Event Winner...

For the past several years when Don & Bunny Henderson rolled into Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the Annual Labor Day race that ran PSCA cars at night and Jr's during the day. Winning the Jr Dragster class that daughter Meaghan competed in was always one of their dreams.. But this time was a little different, yes the she still ran the Jr. during the day, but at night she rolled out the Vogue Marine Center Boat & RV Storage 7-sec Dragster powered by a Fauset Racing Engine to compete in the Calvert Racing Bracket-1 class!!!

After 2 long hot days of racing, Sunday night PSCA Eliminations was a refreshing break as the temps dropped to a comfortable level. In round one, Meaghan lost to LVMS regular Scott Horsley in his familiar '55 Chevy in a double breakout. Lucky for the young Henderson, the PSCA has 1st round loser buybacks, so for a mere $20 Meaghan was back in the game. It was now around 9pm and the Henderson family has been racing since 8am but you couldn't tell as they started to find their grove and march through the competitors. 2nd round victim was a past PSCA event winner Andy Pressimore, 3rd round she beat Ken Spears and ran an almost perfect pass (5.20 light and 7.729 on a 7.72 dial) Round 4 she beat a past PSCA Bracket-1 winner Josh Edwards with a 7.713 on a 7.71 dial and forced Edwards to break out by 7-thousandths. The Semi-Finals was Meaghan's easiest run as Robert Broguiere had starting line issues and the car simply did not move..>Read More<

PSCA's Very Own Dave Murray And "Team Coppertop" Gets Big Win In Sac Town...

SACRAMENTO, CA - After PSCA Event Director, Dave Murray, found out about a "West Coast Grudge Racer" event that was intended for nitrous cars that only could use a single nitrous plate "Plate Race" on the Yellow Bullet racer forum, he knew that his 1989 Mustang that was raced in PSCA True Street would be a perfect fit. Working feverously for several weeks with a lot of help from fellow Coppertop Racing team mate Scott Schwinning, Dave was able to complete the rebuild of his Hot Rod with literally a few hours to spare (maybe a few minutes would be closer to the truth)

Dave, wife Christina, Baby David & Scott Schwinning arrived at Sacramento Raceway Park on Friday night with no test hits on the Stang, but the team was confident.. On the first time trial run, the Small Block Ford laid down a stout 5.50 1/8 mile blast and the team was ready for the Saturday night shootout!!!

After reading the message forum early that morning, Dave wasn't sure how many cars were going to be entered in his class. it appeared at least 8 cars will be running for the winner take all purse ($300.00 to enter) The "Plate Race" After a Saturday evening qualifying pass there were 7 cars still running to make elimination's. All the driver's names were placed in a hat and a elimination ladder was set.. Dave had a bye (Odd number of cars) Other notable's left after the first round were 3-time PSCA True Street Champion George Raygoza, PSCA Hot Street racer Michael Valentio and Billy Alston.. And that would match-up Valentio & Alston in one semi and Murray & Ryagoza in the other.. Michael in the Hot Street Camaro powered by a small block Ford would make his quickest pass of the night to put Billy on the trailer and that would leave Dave & George to battle for the other final round spot.. Murray left the line and it was no doubt the Mustang was headed for the money round against the quickest car on the property (Valentio)

The best was yet to come as both Dave & Michael had a long trash talking session between rounds... When both drivers staged up and the lights went down, the crews & fans got to witness both cars carry the front wheels hundreds of feet with Valentio having to lift first as his car would not come back down to earth and Murray darted off for the big win!!!!

Northern California has been a very prosperous place for CopperTop to race, a few years back he beat the internet famous Dave Bowman in a 10.5 event in Redding, CA.

Dave would like to thank the following companies that made his trip to the winner's circle a reality:

Sikora Impresses Them At The Super Bowl....

JOLIET, IL - 3-Time PSCA Outlaw 10.5 Champion Doug Sikora and his Sikora Racing 2000 ProCharged Mustang attended the NMRA/NMCA SuperBowl in Chicago this past weekend and came 0.015 from a perfect weekend (Well almost perfect)

Before Doug, Jason & Brian began the 2000 mile trek to Illinois, just being competitive was the main goal... That quickly changed after the 1st round of qualifying was in the books as Sikora blasted a blistering 6.71 and took the provisional #1 spot. During the mandatory NMRA "Fuel Check" Sikora quickly learned that the fuel he had been using (Q-16) was not allowed by the association and that run was disallowed. Many of his fellow Pro Outlaw 10.5 competitors heard or watched the pass and Doug's pit was busy with congratulations and idea's on how to rid the fuel system of the Q-16 oxygenated composites so it would be able to pass the fuel check using the replacement fuel (C-16) The Sikora Racing Team worked until 4am removing all the fuel related parts & pieces to decontaminate them using the exhaust gasses from their generator and rental car, that's right the rental cars exhaust pipe was plumbed into the fuel cell and run for hours using the carbon monoxide gasses.. After flushing the system out with fresh C-16 (Thanks to Rob Golobo & AJ Powell) and several re-tuning tips by some of the world's best fuel injection minds that were in attendance, Doug was ready....Tired, but ready

With the 2nd round of qualifying canceled due to the facility curfew and cold track conditions (That's right, unseasonably cool mid to low 50's once the sun went down) One round was all that was left for Sikora to make the show... No one knew what to expect since the car has never run on anything but Q-16. As the Mustang left the starting line everyone knew it was "on a pass"!! But when the 6.69 flashed on the scoreboard, Sikora's crew was kinda in disbelief as Doug recorded his quickest pass to date and now had a chance to own a coveted NMRA record as well... And one more thing, that put him back at the #1 qualified position!

"The track is one of the best around"  said an excited Sikora. "Plus we have never experienced this good of atmospheric conditions" Sikora went on to say. Now it was time to get ready for elimination's as this event featured round 1 directly after qualifying on Sat evening. Sikora had a bye and preceded to run even quicker (6.68) to move to the semi's against the series points leader Mike Murrillo.

Sunday's elimination's brought new challenges as the 3 remaining contenders all were Champion's (Mike Murillo, Conrad Scarry & Dan Millen) and with boosted big horsepower combination's that could easily run 6.60's or better, Sikora had to be on his game. In the Semi's against Murrillo, Mike left the starting line first but had problems down track and Sikora had a slower ET than the day before (6.725) but that was good enough for lane choice in the finals as Millen posted a 6.726 to defeat Conrad Scarry.

The final round was going to be "one for the ages" and everyone knew it!! Both cars were running very consistent and the driver's had a little added pressure since the cars were so evenly matched, it might come down to the dreaded reaction times? As the cars staged it seemed like many of the race teams came from the pits to witness this epic "East Vs. West" battle. When the tree dropped, Sikora took what looked like a instrumental starting line advantage (.423 to .449) Doug was also quicker to the 1/8th, but couldn't hold off the big turbo charged horsepower of Millen, and was passed right at the finish line. Millen's 6.727 beat Sikora's 6.768 by 0.015

This weekend's performances by Sikora gives him a little extra confidence going into the big Street Car Super Nationals this Nov 19-22 in Las Vegas as many of the teams that competed in Joliet will be making the trip out west to compete at "America's Greatest Drag Strip" Las Vegas Motor Speedway. "Not sure if we can run in the 60's at the Vegas altitude" claimed Sikora "But we are sure gonna try"

Doug would like to thank Charlie Harmon and Steve Wolcott of the NMRA/NMCA for all the hospitality, the entire Route 66 track crew on near perfect track conditions all weekend, all the NMRA/NMCA racers and crew members that welcomed us as if we were family, my Sikora Racing Team (Jason, Brian, Bob, Roger & Mel) for all the long hours, couldn't have done it without you guys!! Walker extends PSCA Pro Street points lead with win, career best performance in Vegas...

PALM DESERT, CA - The only match for the searing hot temperatures at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway June 19-20 was the Pacific Street Car Association's hottest Pro Street driver, Randy Walker.

As he's already done several times this season, Walker used a series of blistering mid 6.30 passes and double-oh reaction times to lay claim to the PSCA MagnaFuel Summer Nationals Pro Street crown under the lights in Vegas.

After struggling with ring & pinion and clutch issues during qualifying, Walker and his flat-black '74 El Camino ended up in the fourth qualifying position with a solid 6.460, 217.74 MPH effort. "The car has been running so well lately that the problems we were running into in qualifying really caught us off guard," Walker said. "Luckily we were able to still land somewhere up near the top of the field, and I had complete faith in our team to get the problems sorted out before eliminations.">Read More<

Sikora Going To The Super Bowl....

BARSTOW, CA - Doug Sikora of Sikora Racing (3-Time PSCA Outlaw 10.5 Champion) today announced his teams plans on attending the NMCA/NMRA Super Bowl event to be held at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Illinois. This will be the first time since 1996 that the California based ProCharged Mustang will venture east to compete against the countries top 10.5 racers.

Fresh off his win at the PSCA/MagnaFuel Summer Nationals, Doug ran a personal best 6.878 at 207.27 MPH in very bad air conditions. To say the least, his confidence is at an all time high "We finally think we have a car and combo that can compete on the national level, and this race should have the best of the best in attendance." said an excited Sikora. "This opportunity will be a great experience to gauge our team against some of the East & Midwest cars that will be traveling to Vegas this Nov 19-22 to compete at the Street Car Super Nationals".

Meadors Speeds to Semi Finals in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, CA - It was a scorcher in Sacramento last weekend for freshman Pro Mod racer Marc Meadors and the Goodguys Racing '69 Camaro. Making his return to competition with the West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod Association, Meadors and the Goodguys Racing crew were looking for their second win of the season at the 33rd annual Nitro Night of Fire and had to roll the dice to do it.

After making a motor-wounding 6.37 @ 223 test run Friday, the team missed Friday's opening round of qualifying leaving them with a one-shot, qualify-or-go-home run on Saturday afternoon in 107 degree heat! The silver Camaro streaked to a 6.354 @ 227.9 to grab the 3rd position in the 8-car program. >Read More<

Back to the Future with George Klass

IRVINE, CA - One neat thing about drag racing is that it is very easy to describe to folks that know nothing about it.

"It's an acceleration contest in a straight line, between two cars, to see who can get to the finish line first."

I was having a discussion the other day with Carl Olson, the SFI Motorsports Manager. Carl was a drag racer in his younger days, drove a Top Fuel dragster for many years when dragsters had the engines in front of the drivers (I lost interest in dragsters and Indy cars when they stuck the engines behind the drivers, but I digress). Carl won plenty of drag races including Top Eliminator at the final race held at Lions Drag Strip.  >Read More<

Carpenter Tunes Walker to 2nd Consecutive win!!

FONTANA, CA -  Pro Mod racer Charles Carpenter has made a huge impression on the West Coast Pro Street crowd by tuning Palm Desert, Calif., racer Randy Walker to consecutive wins and now the points lead in PSCA's Pro Street class.

Walker's 1974 El Camino used the last qualifying session on Saturday of the Probe Industries California Nationals to leap past Clint Hairston and Tim Henry with an impressive 6.376/219.72 blast down the very hot Auto Club Dragway (Fontana, Calif.) surface to take the pole going into Sunday's eliminations.

With bracket car consistency, Randy and the Walker Autoworks team put together runs of 6.399, 6.382 and 6.394 to earn their way to the final round against a fellow nitrous competitor, Kelly Bluebaugh. The final round was as good as it gets when Walker left the starting line first and beat the quicker Bluebaugh 6.474 to 6.461. We'll have complete results later in the week.

The Walker Autoworks crew will look to increase their points leads at the next PSCA event "MagnaFuel" Summer Nationals to be held June 19-20 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Meadors Runs Career Best In Sacramento!!!

SACRAMENTO, CA - The Goodguys Racing, Red Line Oil and Comp Cams-sponsored '69 Camaro Pro Mod coupe driven by Marc Meadors of Danville, CA was back on track this past weekend going for glory at the annual Funny Car Fever event at Sacramento Raceway Park.

The Goodguys Racing Team was on hand to compete in the special 8-car exhibition field promoted by the popular West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod Association. Coming off his first-ever career Pro Mod win at last month's Super Chevy Sunday event in Fontana, California, Meadors again raised eyebrows as he and the team were able to qualify for the eliminator field in the #6 spot with a conservative 7.009 @ 185.31 on the tricky track surface.

But the real fireworks came in Saturday's opening round of eliminations.  Stuck in the track's infamous left lane (a historically treacherous racing surface with a tricky bump about half way down) Meadors charged straight downtrack to record a career-best run, clicking off a 6.429 @ 218.04 mph. Despite the heroic effort, Meadors came up just inches short of defeating his fellow competitor Jay Diedrich who ran a 6.443 at a slightly faster 222.56mph. Ignoring the narrow loss, the magnitude of Meadors' run in the track's bad lane was not lost on the event organizer's who called it "perhaps the run of the day."

While it's never easy leaving eliminations early, the Goodguys Racing Team is now supremely confident they can compete with the West Coast's fastest Pro Mods under any conditions at any track. "I'm really proud of this team," said a smiling Marc Meadors in the pits after the event. Jason Bunker, Jeff Accacian, Andy Ferreira and "Six Pound" Billy Fereira are some of the best in this business. These cars are monsters. Harnessing their brute strength and finessing them down tricky track surfaces is not easy. We will be a handful at the next event.

Next up for the Goodguys Racing team is the PSCA California Nationals May 15-16-17 in Fontana. For a look at the team, including photos, team news and more, visit www.meadorsracing.com.

"Nuke" Shatters The PSCA Outlaw 10.5 MPH Record!!!

LAS VEGAS, NV - One year ago at the 2008 PSCA Las Vegas Nationals, Greg "Nuke" Seth-Hunter (Nickname "Nuke" was given by friends after Greg continuously melted down several engines) of Simi Valley California was testing his awesome '70 Nova and something terribly went wrong. Greg crashed going thru the traps and nearly totaled out the Outlaw car. Well, One year after that very forgettable date, Seth-Hunter notched his 1st ever PSCA victory and shattered the MPH record in the process!!! Not only did Greg win the event, he set personal bests in ET & MPH (6.972/209.10)  The 209.10 is the PSCA New Accufab Outlaw 10.5 MPH Record... Seth-Hunter now has a share of the PSCA Outlaw 10.5 points lead and will do what it takes to win the Championship!! Probe Industries "California Nationals" May 15-17 at Fontana, CA. will be the next PSCA event.
